Engineering apprenticeship strategy and programme review

 

The brief

AWD Development Solutions Ltd was appointed by Training 2000 to work on their behalf with a major transport organisation. Our brief was to carry out an independent review of the engineering apprenticeship scheme for the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and propose recommendations for a way forward for the vision and strategy of the scheme. The organisation already recognised the importance of apprentices to the business and the current level of activity, but wanted to make further improvements and had a strong desire to make things even better. They wanted to build on the on-going activities and strengthen the capability and capacity of the in-house team.

Our approach

Our approach began by holding a significant number of interviews and discussions with stakeholders of the apprenticeship process. The resulting information and large number of comments was reviewed, analysed and summarised. Key themes were identified and a framework was developed. This framework provided a structure to break the strategy into a series of ‘building block’ elements. Conclusions were then drawn against each of the elements and recommendations developed.    

The outputs

 The following outputs were produced and delivered to the customer:

  • A summary of first impressions, strengths of the current schemes, challenges faced and opportunities for improvement
  • A capture of senior line manager comments
  • A list of proposed areas for further consideration and discussion
  • Improvement activities broken down into longer term actions and quick hits
  • Suggested next steps to be taken
  • A detailed report of the review and the specific improvement recommendations which were structured around the strategic elements (56 recommendations were identified)
  • A presentation was made to the COO, seniors in the COO team, Apprenticeship and HR teams which summarised the process, findings and improvement recommendations.
